Following our previous update regarding Myanmar’s Patent Law coming into force on May 31, 2024, we are pleased to share a significant development in Myanmar’s intellectual property (IP) system.

On October 31, 2024, at a ceremony held in Nay Pyi Taw, the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) of Myanmar announced the official commencement of patent filings in Myanmar. This marks a milestone, opening new avenues for inventors and businesses seeking patent protection in Myanmar.

 

Patent filings in Myanmar are officially accepted, opening doors for inventors worldwide

 

Currently, as Myanmar is not yet a member of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), it follows the Paris Convention. Consequently, the filing deadline is 12 months from the priority date or the date of an international exhibition. Below is a summary of key information for filing a patent in Myanmar:
